As local Alice Springs Architect who has been living and working in the Central Australian desert for over 30 years, my office has developed an in-depth and practical understanding of the design principles for environmentally and culturally responsive architecture in remote and regional localities.
For many years, the team have worked with various remote Aboriginal communities around Central Australia and have also built extensively within the urban setting of Alice Springs. Projects delivered consist of housing, retail, tourism, education and health related buildings and many involved research and development into practical building technologies for use in remote area construction. The firm has worked extensively with implementing energy saving alternatives to achieve comfort level conditions whilst balancing the long term operating costs, clients’ budgets and functional boundaries. Throughout the 1980’s and 90’s, Brendan was instrumental in the reuse of earth construction in the central desert region through empowerment programs that encouraged self help building and localised industry creation opportunities.
Over time built environments that our office has played key roles in delivering have received awards in the Northern Territory, nationally and internationally for their ability to respond to people and place, and demonstrate ecologically responsible architecture.
Recently, Brendan has commenced with the University of Newcastle to under take a PhD scholarship which focuses on developing methodologies for Remote Aboriginal Community to become more self empowered.
