Simrel Achenbach, after 15 years of international experience in art and design, set out to form a design/build workshop in Brooklyn, integrating contemporary design and the legacy of 20th century Modernism with a focused attention to process, material and craftsmanship, using state-of-the-art machinery with a mastery of traditional hand joinery. He founded descience Lab in 2000, an amalgamation of design (aesthetics) – science (process) – lab (the space & means to execute an idea). With this foundation, Descience Lab has consistently produced quality, from a simple coffee table to a 6000 square foot house, applying the lessons learned to all facets of design and fabrication.
