Located in Southern Pattaya, Thailand, Andaz Pattaya is a successful demonstration of developing resort property with harmonious respect for the existing ecology of the site. The master planning was set with the efforts to preserve the existing heritage of the site, a cluster of Thai vernacular houses, and the precious trees planted from sprouts by the owner since 1960. It establishes true sustainability in aspects of design, operation, and business.
Respecting to its location, the design strategy artfully embraces the fundamental concepts of sustainability. The process started with studies of the site’s topography and the selection of existing trees that are prominent in the area. Selected specimen marks a node that strings together into a journey that leads guests from the resort entrance to the beach area, visiting significant trees of within the vicinity. Each node varies in mood and space as elements of Pattaya’s local charms and crafts complement individual characters of the heritages trees. By using local plant species, they created a self-sustaining landscape that support resilience in many seasons, bind the soil together and preventing water erosion.
Set amongst historical Trees, the building layout plan avoided them on site and integrated with Thai heritage elements including the shape of Thai vernacular houses, wooden terrace, waterfront stairway. These elements were used local materials which are a direct representation of the culture and technology of the era. Small stream used to collect rainwater, provide surface drainage and reduce water usage for maintenance. The intent is to protect and enhance the charm of its site. The design team ensured that every detail of the project responded to its spirit. Guests can appreciate the essence of the patron’s love for their precious greens, indulge in the aroma of local hospitality and reconnect with themselves and nature.
