Part Museum, Part Boat: Guggenheim Museum Competition, Helsinki, 2014
in collaboration with COMMA
ArtDock is a dock for a floating fragment of the museum that travels the world. This ArtBoat takes the Guggenheim experience on the water in the spirit of openness and public engagement, akin to the Guggenheim lab. This is a primary conceptual move: the overall form and circulation of the building are generated by the presence (and absence) of this fragment.
This proposal engages the city of Helsinki’s rich tradition of public space, its parks and its maritime setting. First, ArtDock draws in and connects at various levels the landscapes from the city: from Tähtitornin Vuori park and from the Olympia Deck, to create a new fluid and connective groundscape. Second, by pulling the ground up and through the museum (akin to a sectional Carpenter Center), ArtDock provides a second public terrace and panoramic views back to the city.
