One Works was recently appointed for the design of a new state-of-the-art multimodal interchange in Catania allowing easy connections between private vehicles, urban and suburban buses, the underground and railway link.
The Nearly Zero-Emission Building (NZEB) development features one large 200-person bus lounge, passenger facilities, office space, and a ticket office, as well as a covered mezzanine level connecting the different functions, all under a green roof structure.
In addition to significant upgrades to the surrounding road infrastructure and green spaces, the new bus terminal will also include 25 stalls for bus parking, 8 electric car charging stalls, 16 car sharing, and 20 bike-sharing stalls.
The project envisages the construction of a system of connections on the mezzanine level of the future subway station so that the subway, railway station, bus station and car parks are connected without any conflict with the road system. This connection will be easily made by extending an emergency exit by approximately 60m to the bus station and by 50m toward the railway station. This path will not only be on the underground level, but also on the ground floor to maintain connections even at times when the metro may be closed, the connection with the railway station is instead provided on the surface with pedestrian crossings at ground level.
