The two-story community center anchors the bottom floor of Dattner Architects 14-story, affordable mixed-use residential building—Chestnut Commons. Developed and operated by locally-based organizations with strong community ties, Chestnut Commons strengthens the neighborhood with the inclusion of economic development and educational opportunities, arts programming, and job training services.
The community center will serve as the main office space for Cypress Hills Local Development Corp. (CHLDC) which also operates the center and develops the programming. The community center includes a large, flexible lobby space, a Brooklyn Federal Credit Union branch, a café, and a commercial kitchen used both for job training and as an incubator to provide access to local culinary-based businesses in need of commercial cooking space.
The center sublets for local businesses including a multipurpose room for youth classes and parenting classes, Housing Plus offices, computer lab, Kingsborough Community College offices and classrooms, multipurpose / recreation facility with locker rooms, and construction job training classroom and offices.
