Chicago Youth Centers are the oldest independent, multi-site youth services organization that invests in under served communities. With a $15,000 total budget and a service grant from Designs 4 Dignity, the 1,200sf project was maximized through leveraging overstock materials, furnishings, local partnerships and volunteer labor. Visitors are first greeted with the bold shape of the reception wrap covered in reclaimed wood from deconstructed buildings throughout Chicago and invited to sit on either of the fixed benches. Color enlivens the space, from the bench cushions to the rear reception wall to the historic CYC mosaic. The fish tank and trophy case are integrated in the second fixed bench design and draw people further into the entry space. Quality lighting reinforces the linear design concept and provides illumination for all the offices while achieving ADA compliance.
