This project was built to replace an existing school to accommodate a creative student body and to add value to the student experience by creating specific and spontaneous spaces for socialization, rehearsal, and student gathering.
With an extremely efficient footprint, the school adheres to a strict program and budget. The building section staggers the main corridor on each floor level creating a variety of room sizes and proportions. The library projects outward creating a dramatic "performative" image to the public, while creating an outdoor performance space protected from the weather.
The iconic brise soleil alludes to "the hive," a clear analogue to the collective, creative activities of the students. As a public institution, the school has become a welcomed and celebrated landmark that defines the neighbourhood.
