Emergent Fluidity in Modularity
In pursuit of fluidity
in contemporary architectural aesthetics, a modular approach is taken to explore
emergent effects through aggregation of adaptive modules and also to embrace
rationality and material reality. The contemporary computational design
technology provides capability to design the modules and their aggregation
simultaneously within rational logics and this design process generated cloud
like fluid quality emerged out of the aggregation of variations of the modules.
The modular pattern on the front and the side facade are continuously wrapping
around the building generating horizontal flow on which the fluid quality
emerges.
Legacy of Expressive Patterning
The geometric pattern of the facade of the theater is
designed to have expressive and aggressive quality embracing the traditional Russian aesthetics
symbolized by the towers of Saint Basil's Cathedral in Moscow. This design has continuous gradient of transformation from the relatively
conservative pattern only with color differentiation on the back end of the
side walls to the expressive and aggressive pattern on the front facade with
the geometrically differentiated glazing facade modules.
Enhancement of Iconic Form
The cantilevered diagonal canopy of the Pushkinsky Cinema is
recognized as an icon of the Cinema and Pushkinsky Square, as shown in the the
Cinema's logo graphic. The new design enhances this existing iconic quality of
the building further more by extending the canopy out to the edge of the site.
This extended canopy also provides the function of visual communication media
with the transparent LED screen. This function is desperately needed currently even with the
sacrifice of the visual quality of the front face of the building. The extended
canopy integrates this desired function and the iconic form of the building adding
the sense of technological advancement.
