Broadway Cloverfield are a pair of mixed-use buildings for Santa Monica. Situated within close proximity to the expo line, the buildings provide much-needed housing for the coastal City with direct access to Los Angeles.
Developed and built as one project, the two buildings are similar in scale and use but each possesses their own defining characteristics. The play of contrasts serves as the driver for the project. The counterpoints are used as an opportunity to push ideas. The differences in both design strategies and materiality set up a dynamic dialogue.
The Cloverfield building is heavy and grounded. Concrete piers of rusticated board-formed concrete comprise the base with integral planters along the street. A dark, rich material palette is used, that includes, board-formed reinforced concrete, corrugated metal, louvered metal screens, and charcoal integral smooth plaster. The corner of the building is celebrated with a monolithic, sculptural form that marks the busy intersection. The iconic volume hovers over the outdoor space below, sheathed in vertical slats the piece is split and open to the sky.
The Broadway building, in contrast, is the lighter counterpart. Smooth, slender, round columns lift the building from the ground. A lighter material palette is used throughout that consists of smooth concrete, cement fiberboard and metal cladding. A vertical green wall defines the entry at the Southwest Corner of the building. A folded steel frame that extends the height of the building, clad in expanded wire mesh defines the entry. A selection of light, airy landscape features complete the scheme.
Broadway Cloverfield provides 50 residences (including some that are affordable) for the City of Santa Monica. The highly sustainable buildings are rich with resident amenities that include lush rooftop terraces, ample outdoor open spaces, lounges, a gym, shared office spaces and more.
