At the core of the design for the new offices for a highly successful family owned Vancouver business focused on Agribusiness trading, logistics and processing was the company’s foundational values of integrity, reliability and resourcefulness. As a family run company, we placed at the heart of the space a fully functioning kitchen and family table allowing for everyone to eat together and play together during and after office hours. The kitchen was designed to transform into a bar for evening social functions encouraging a collaborative, innovative atmosphere, and a comfortable, modern space to celebrate individual and group successes together. Highly refined and innovative millwork, lighting and custom furniture and workstations throughout the space spoke to the core principles of integrity and reliability. The design avoided the use of walls, balancing open space with defined meeting and break out spaces through millwork. The boardroom is made from sections of curved overlapping glass and walnut panels giving the space a simultaneously open yet intimate expression. The main two workstation areas were balanced on two sides of the space, one for the noisier trading team and the other for the quieter administration team, with collective meeting and break out spaces sprinkled throughout the floor plate. Lighting was carefully planned to cue navigation through the office, with brighter moments at the entrance and walkways while provide intimacy in meeting spaces, and lower light levels at workstations to reduce fatigue and eye strain. At the entrance to the office we designed a sculptural reception desk, embodying the company’s approach to excellence. In its fabrication the reception desk combining both computer controlled milling with the intricacy and care of hand craftsmanship creating an object that could only be possible with the mastery of both.
