“Titled Cosmos Cinema, the 14th Shanghai Biennale will offer visitors a spacetime in which to reflect on the operations of the universe and our place within it,” states the curatorial statement. COLLECTIVE envisions the exhibition space as a cinematic universe – the COSMOS – full of celestial bodies, galaxies, blackness, and starlight. Within this cosmic realm, where scale holds no dominion and gravity surrenders, CINEMA transcends mere observation; it transforms into an immersive experience of movement through the celestial expanse. Montage is the strategy the architects use to CINEMA the COSMOS, orchestrating a cinematic voyage that weaves together elements of light, shadow, and spatial arrangement to evoke a sense of wonder and awe.
The Shanghai Biennale set its home in the Power Station of Art, a 19th-century electric plant transformed into a contemporary art museum towering beside Shanghai’s Huangpu River. With artworks from 75 artists from China and worldwide, COLLECTIVE faced the challenge of creating a guided journey for visitors to navigate, contemplate, and immerse themselves in serendipity without getting lost. It also presented an opportunity to harmonize the museum’s industrial heritage architecturally with contemporary artworks.
To achieve this, the architects worked closely with the curatorial team to design an intricate circulation plan aimed at fully immersing visitors in the COSMOS CINEMA experience. Together, they devised a journey comprising nine chapters, known as the “Nine Palaces of Cosmos Cinema.” All exhibition spaces were captured in frames edited into a sequence. These space-frames were arranged through blackout curtains and a series of geometric vessels containing artworks, strategically positioned to provide directional cues, assisting visitors in navigating this cinematic cosmos.
The scenography and exhibition design empower the audience to explore architectural spaces and artworks through stimulating their senses and offering diverse perspectives across the curated spacetime. This immersive journey culminates in a profound realization: Space is Cosmos, Movement is Cinema.
