As part of a larger campus initiative for the performing arts, Pfeiffer was retained to transform Baldwin Auditorium into a more intimate, state-of-the-art, acoustically superior facility for music. The challenge was to work with the historic architecture of a room that was not proportioned to provide the proper acoustics and sightlines, while still retaining its historic architecture. An initial study considered approaches to renovation of the building within a predetermined budget. The design team recommended an affordable scope of renovation and guided Duke faculty and facilities staff through a process to make informed decisions for creating the best possible outcome, which was then designed and implemented. A 700-seat theater with a new balcony and an extended stage is wrapped by an enlarged lobby, as well as new performer and audience support spaces. Pfeiffer also recommended and designed the music building expansion which includes an open air performance space as well as academic and music labs.
