Our team's design for the Saint-René primary school expansion provides a clear and updated picture of the three main challenges facing 21st-century schools: student advancement, student fulfillment, and the development of teamwork capabilities. The concept is elaborated from the viewpoint of the learner and his unique relationship to his surroundings, rejecting the traditional typology in the process. It is based on a familiar image associated with comfort and safety—the house with a sloping roof—and it is scaled to add a familiar dimension to the location of basic education. The development of houses is a direct result of this concept. The houses, which each group four classrooms together, also include collaboration areas that are multipurpose. These smaller spaces are separated from the classrooms by moveable glass walls that provide different configurations according to teaching strategies.
The project was realized in consortium with DKA achitects
