Foster Lomas came third in the Elmswell Affordable Housing Competition, based in Suffolk. Through collaboration with Landscape Architects GrantAssociates, Environmental Consultants XCO2 and Engineer Alan Conisbee and Associates, Foster Lomas developed a sustainable design seamlessly integrating landscape and architecture, through materiality, a close physical relationship between external and internal environments and through the use of sustainable energy sources. The design developed around a new Village Green and Promenade, providing shared pedestrian and vehicular access, enlivening the space. On site carbon neutral sources provide 50% of the development’s electrical energy needs, 75% of its water needs and 100% of space and water heating requirements. The proposed timber shingle clad buildings combine modern, sustainable construction technologies with building forms and techniques derived from the local vernacular.
