RKTB worked with the New York City Dept. of design and Construction and the Fire Department of NY on one of the first new firehouses to be built under DDC's Design Excellence Program, which sets the general design standard for all new firehouses.
The new, 3-story facility for EC201 replaces its existing 2-story firehouse on Fourth Avenue in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. The new design gives the highest priorities to apparatus floor function, vertical circulation, response time and operation of the shared spaces on the ground-floor as requested by the firefighters themselves. The second floor contains offices, bunkrooms, toilets, lockers and storage facilities with quick horizontal and vertical circulation allowing access to the front and rear of the apparatus trucks on the ground floor. The third floor is devoted to the private spaces of the firefighters and includes a dormitory bunk room, study facilities and locker rooms.
