The Excelsior is a 13,800 square-foot transitional student housing project that offers 29 bedrooms located in East Hollywood. The building is situated on an infill lot within close proximity to the Metro Vermont/Santa Monica Red line stop. The 2-story building contains 15 row-house style units with each having 5 to 6 bedrooms that share kitchen and social spaces. The units are lifted above the concrete base and are contained within a singular building massing to maximize efficiency. The elevated residences access views of the surrounding mountains, Hollywood Sign and the towers of downtown Los Angeles.
This student housing facility benefits from Tighe’s co-living expertise. Well-designed co-living promotes social networking and a sense of community by allowing residents to share enhanced common spaces. A new take on an old idea, market rate co-living is geared towards a millennial generation that places even higher values on things like openness, collaboration, social networking, and the sharing economy. Thus, modern student housing informed by co-living best practices results in even better student housing environments.
As a transitional student housing facility, The Excelsior serves a particularly acute need in the East Hollywood section of Los Angeles. Very low income students benefit from the operator’s mission to increase quality housing stock for students at-risk for homelessness – addressing an often under-recognized impediment to social mobility.
