To a large extent, the shape of the building is determined by the clear and explicit division into functional sections with well defined and consistently observed restrictions concerning their access. Every section constitutes an individual structural component of the complex which can be temporarily isolated and partially or totally cut off from the remaining parts.
It is a three storey passageway, containing the system of upwards communication which connects both wings of the building. The passageway is located centrally and is used by staff, students and visitors. Both wings are additionally equipped with another passageway – located at the southern part of the structure at the basement level. It serves as commodity transport channel e.g. for transporting: equipment, research materials, reagents, gases, waste etc.
The grass-covered patios enclosed and inaccessible from the outside, were designed between the structural components of the complex. Two specialist laboratories, located on the basement-level of two patios demand an individual setting.
Spatial concept, installations and formal structure allow for an unusual internal flexibility with regard to the application of space.
