This mission-driven project provides a real home for families with a critically ill child being treated at a local, world-renowned children’s hospital.
Located just across the street from the children’s hospital, a family can conveniently walk back and forth between the two during their stay. The client favored a traditional exterior design to better blend with surrounding single family homes and to lend a feeling of comfort to the resident families. The building’s U-shaped form screens an interior courtyard from the urban environment, providing an oasis for the guests. All interior spaces orient to the courtyard, providing a visual respite and ensuring every space receives natural daylight. Interiors merge bold contemporary elements with traditional textures and materials in a pleasing contrast.
Able to accommodate up to 24 families, flexibility is key. The interior is designed in accordance with the patterns of family life in ordinary times and is zoned with public, semi-public and private spaces. On the main floor, the entry area, check-in, and living room are open with comfortable seating areas for families as they arrive for the first time. To the west, the floor plan breaks down into semi-public areas with a library, kitchen, dining rooms, family room, and children’s play/teen lounge. Upstairs, the floor plans offer both private suites and community lounge space for semi-secluded interaction.
The continuity of spaces throughout the home means family members can be together while pursuing separate activities, just as they might at home. The plan also acknowledges that individuals find sanctuary in different ways and offers quiet spaces, active spaces, spaces with an interior focus and with an exterior focus.
