The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is an iconic cultural
institution and vital component of New York City's tourist and
educational landscape. The museum campus includes a visitor's center,
the SSG Growler cold war missile submarine, a British Airways Concorde
jet and a collection of over 20 historic military aircraft. All are
displayed on the flight and hangar decks of the aircraft carrier, USS
Intrepid. We renovated the interior of the Intrepid's hangar deck (the
primary exhibit space) by developing a new exhibit and display system
standard for the entire museum campus.
Working with the museum's curatorial department, we assessed existing
artifacts, content, circulation and audience types and analyzed
educational, special events and fundraising/donor programs. From this
process, we crafted an experience strategy based on the juxtaposition of
the technical "machine" aspects of the ship and artifacts against the
emotive "human stories" of the ship's crew, traditions and historic
eras. Our design solution creates a new visitor experience and
incorporates a dynamic modular framework that supports flexible artifact
installation, improved lighting, enhanced video projection and
integrated new, interactive technologies. This system improved visitor
flow and content comprehension while respecting the USS Intrepid's
National Historic Landmark status.Awards:
