Ranging from the simplest installation in the landscape to multidisciplinary art performances, Atelier Pierre Thibault’s research on ephemeral architecture significantly enriches its practice of architecture. In pursuing these studies, Chambre blanche is an exploratory project that will generate new ideas. The passage of Chambre blanche at the Circuit-Est choreographic center was a step in this process.
This stage of the process explored the theme of delicacy, lightness and fragility. Five "chambers" were created, delimited by semi-transparent fabric hanging from metal frames to create light and shadow games. According to the principle of an open workshop, the installation of this project enabled several improvisations.
The five "chambers", made of the same materiality, created spaces with different qualities. The chambers were of different sizes and proportions and were placed at varying heights. The installation played on the spatial perception of the visitor. Some of the chambers were smaller, closer to the body, while others were larger. Even when unreachable, a suspended chamber above the head gave an impression of intimacy when we were under.
A loop of lighting was also created in order to change the perception we had of each chamber. When the chambers were lit from above, they were translucent and the people that were inside suddenly appeared to the spectators. However, when the walls of fabric were it, they became opaque and seemed heavier.
Always in the spirit of improvisation, a dance performance took place in interaction with the chambers. The dancers themselves decided to evolve according to three themes: matter, space and dance. A DJ playing live improvised music accompanied the performance. Spectators then had the possibility to experiment themselves with the chambers, indulging in all sorts of experiments and apprehension of the structures.
