As part of the Quebec Ministry of Education plan to renew pedagogy at secondary level, LaSalle is one of 16 new schools to incorporate ideas from a series of intensive workshops focused on developing an architecture of convergence that is more welcoming and open to the community, while instilling a real sense of belonging for teachers and students alike.
The architectural signature of these sixteen new schools promotes local innovation, the use of sustainable materials and a formal expression of an identity, through the implementation of a unique integrated structure adapted to its environment.
Located at the center of a vast school campus that includes a CEGEP, an elementary school and an aquatic center, the new LaSalle Secondary School establishes a strong connection with its surrounding environment. It fits within this existing built compound with two interfaces, one in dialogue with the town and the other facing a sports field, hence connecting the campus exterior hub with the school’s heart, boosting overall user mobility and encouraging informal gatherings. The civic façade welcomes students, staff and visitors who enter seamlessly into a two-storey space on a human scale, bathed in natural light. There, exterior gardens extend into the interior while open lounges and bleachers steer connectivity within the same school, but also between different schools in Quebec and at the community level. Students and the surrounding community come together in this large open space with a simple convivial feel. The first two floors cater to more public activities while classrooms are on the top levels, creating an easily recognisable space hierarchy. Light penetrates everywhere in a biophilic open plan strategy to promote well-being.
Architecture plays an integral part in transforming the emerging generation’s learning process, reinforcing the role of the school as a community player.
