This new one form entry primary school forms part of the Lawley Sustainable Urban Expansion Plan, providing new educational and community facilities for the adjacent residential development.
The school is unique in it’s particular response to the urban context. It is a key architectural component in the new ‘Lawley Square’ – set at the heart of the new Urban Development. Typically primary schools are drawn back into their particular site – set back from the public realm. Under the design code this new school had to reinforce the urban context. In response to the context the school hall is designed as a focal point in Lawley Square, while the adjacent teaching wing is reinforces the adjacent street line. The hall roof extends passed the building envelope to form a canopy which both signals the main entrance to the school and offers shelter.
This approach means that the eastern and northern facades of the new school are placed directly against the public realm. The school therefore has a public face and beyond that a more private intimate set of private spaces. In developing this approach a small public space was formed between the existing adjacent extra care home and the new school hall.
Internally the school is arranged with classrooms paired adjacent to shared activity spaces. The shared activity spaces are expressed on the road elevation as a series of large window apertures.
The building is designed to allow for expansion to a 2FE school at a future date.
