"The new concourses are conceived as a series of pavilions and canopies that are complementary to the Streamline Moderne historic terminal. The new pavilions are anchored by the historic terminal and form an outdoor "meeters and greeters" plaza which is lined by an allee of palm trees. The design of the plaza and the connecting airside garden emphasize the connection to the symmetrical historic terminal, and provide a way finding element for passengers.
The concept of discrete pavilions came about as a response to the budget and square footage limitations imposed by the project. The small scale pavilions are placed where they are functionally required to serve the aircraft, leaving the in between spaces as connecting plazas and gardens. By not enclosing these ?in between? spaces the design is able to not only meet the budget but is able to showcase the historic terminal and the Southern California indoor outdoor lifestyle. The gardens serve as an outdoor waiting room complete with lounges and dining areas. Boardwalks in the garden area recall the local beachfront boardwalks, and native plantings reflect the local flora.
The combined improvements enhance the airport's function and create a positive passenger experience that respects the original building while making much needed operational, security and passenger amenity improvements.
The program includes a new passenger concourse, security screening facility, outdoor baggage claim, concessions, outdoor plaza, and retail."
