BRH+ signs the architectural project for the new headquarters of the historic Turin bookstore, a reference point for international publishing since its foundation in 1872. The studio is also entrusted with the redesign of the bookstore’s visual identity. The new premises are located inside the Galleria Subalpina, an elegant 19th-century passage connecting Piazza Castello and Piazza Carlo Alberto, in the heart of the city's historic centre.
Founded back in 1872 under the name of Libreria Beuf, Libreria Luxemburg has traversed more than a century of history. From being a small shop in post-unification Turin, it has become an essential point of reference for all lovers of books, culture and art. Nowadays it represents one of Italy's most prestigious and long-established bookshops, recognised by the foreign press as one of the world's ten most beautiful bookshops.
The new bookstore headquarters result from the union of three units with a total commercial surface area of 216 square metres, undergoing extensive renovation. The programmatic desire to combine heritage and novelty guides the design of the new premises of the bookstore and its small adjacent cafeteria, as well as the new furnishings, all custom-made and partly designed to integrate the iconic elements of the historical furniture, which have been restored and repositioned.
The project is an opportunity to articulate a network of collaborations with Italian realities of absolute excellence.
The lighting system is realised with fixtures by Ilti Luce and Nemo Lighting, all carefully selected following a careful technical lighting project to enhance each environment of the new headquarters.
The new furnishings for the interiors and shop windows are conceived in wood, Bellagio marble and Giallo Siena marble and executed by the craftsmen of the historic Turin company Sommo Marmi. The pieces are custom-designed to enter into dialogue with the refined collections of ceramic coverings and objects of the Mutina brand. The central counter of the cafeteria is embellished with Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec's Rombini, while Michael Anastassiades' Fringe collection was chosen for the walls and floor. The ceiling of the cash desk space is covered with Adagio, a series of ceramic modules designed by Ronan Bouroullec. For the bathrooms of the bookstore, the ceramics are also by Mutina, with Fringe by Michael Anastassiades and Mattonelle Margherita by Nathalie Du Pasquier.
Libreria Luxemburg's Local Cafeteria results from an excellent collaboration with Caffè Baratti & Milano, an iconic presence in the gallery since its inception. The intimate and cosy space overlooking Via Cesare Battisti makes up Italy's smallest literary café in 13 square metres.
BRH+ is entrusted also with the redesign of the bookstore’s visual identity, which stems from the historical logotype and revamps it, updating the iconic symbol of the owl as a distinctive sign of the new course.
