Plaza Central refers to the idea of metropolitan public space as a reproduction of nature by artificial means in the heart of the Santiago Airport. A representation of the natural environment, a domesticated, an open artificial oasis, a prepared landscape where the user can establish self consciousness and transit from being a user to becoming a passenger. It is proposed, then, to approach this space as a garden, whose different functions and events have a moment free of the “urban activity” of the passenger flows. A series of four moments provide a neutral space between the different boarding processes.
1. Country Image
The first moment receives passengers after the security screening process, with the Country Image in a white corporeal surrounded by the vegetation of the central valley in metal containers. The contrast of artificial and organic textures and shapes seeks to bring passengers closer to the idea of the plaza as a representation of nature in the city. It is the space of the “selfie” and its experience culminates in social networks. Its strategic position in the corner facing the main flow contributes on generate an experience of arrival, but also of transition.
2. Panorama
As an update of the Panorama buildings, recreations of the landscapes explored by 19th century travelers, two facing curved screens propose a final immersive experience in the country's natural territory. By transmitting content specially prepared for this (fundamental landscapes of Chile), an immersive moment is available, so that passengers can remember or say goodbye to the places they visited, build a last memory and share it remotely through their social networks.
3. Forest
An artificial foliage that refers to the space of refuge and shade under the urban trees, or to the groves of squares and parks, is proposed as a third moment, lowering the scale of the space with a sky of wooden slats and rays of light (and WI-FI) that mediates between the passenger and the high height of the passenger terminal hall. It is arranged without direct exposure to the main flow, with the idea of forming a rest space that also hosts other activities associated with the square.
4. Equipment
The fourth moment responds to generating an active and complementary space to the pause time that has been proposed for the square. A food and beverage island and a souvenir kiosk are located under the artificial foliage, inviting passengers to enjoy one last moment in an urban park in the heart of the terminal, before boarding the aircraft. Following this, groups shiny colored metal containers, filled with a landscape architecture that refers to the species, colors and textures of the sclerophyllous condition of the Chilean central valley, designed under criteria of sustainability and low water consumption.
The general plan of the plaza reports the conjunction of different and diverse moments and elements, but with a common story. Experiences, pause spaces, free circulation and complementary activities offer the passenger a buffer space, dissociated from the continuum of boarding processes, to exercise their self-determination regarding these: locate themselves, wait, organize and continue the trip, all in one last alternative. contact with the country's landscape.
