Previan is one of Quebec's leading high-tech companies. Its new head office, located in the Espace d'innovation Michelet in Quebec City, is a multifunctional research center whose main objective is to attract and retain the talent on which the company's strong growth is based.
The well-being of occupants and environmental responsibility are at the forefront of this project, which has obtained LEED v4 certification and is now a candidate for the new BCZ certification to demonstrate the company's exemplary approach to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The work, research and training environment is spatialized to encourage meetings between employees, with a double-height atrium at the heart of the building, which is bright and welcoming thanks to its solid wood structure. A true meeting point for employees, this place of exchange anchors a culture of collaboration and innovation within the Quebec company.
The two phases of this ambitious project are spatially interrelated, but also in their overall approach. Indeed, the building's layout and dimensions were configured to create an outdoor microclimate protected from prevailing winds and the noise of the adjacent freeway. Attractive outdoor spaces were thus created, and their high utilization rate demonstrates that the strategy has produced the desired results.
As the R&D work was largely carried out using software, visual comfort was a major concern. A fixed blackout strategy consisting of a perforated aluminum double skin was therefore integrated into the architecture. Cantilevered to the 2nd level, it acts as a sunshade for the fenestrations all the way down to the first floor, providing visual continuity between the interior and the adjacent landscaping. The double skin also provides a singular, attractive architectural character that the company uses to promote itself to customers and employees.
