This new, five-story addition to P.S. 70 Queens, a primary school in Astoria, opened its doors on the first day of school in September of 2014. The addition accommodates up to 600 new students from grades Pre-K through 5, bringing the capacity to 1700.
The new building is approximately 55,000 SF and includes new classrooms, support spaces, art and music rooms, and a 5400 SF gymnasium. The gymnasium and locker rooms are located in the cellar. The first floor contains a new lobby, medical suite and upper part of the gymnasium. The upper floors house new kindergarten, pre-K and other classrooms along with special classrooms such as art and music.
Because of the size of the new addition the existing building is required to comply fully with ADA law. All existing toilet rooms were replaced to accommodate the handicapped, existing mechanical systems were rehabilitated, and a new elevator was installed to serve all floors of both the new and existing buildings. New landscaped outdoor areas were created as well.
The project complies with the NYC Green Schools Guide and Rating System and uses innovative sun shading over the south facing windows. The building is distinguished by a gently undulating facade that sensitively responds to its mid-block residential setting.
