Reflecting the changing neighborhood dynamics, this contemporary 4-bedroom home stands alone as a beacon of light against the industrial Red Hook, Brooklyn, backdrop of waterfront depots and IKEA ferry traffic.
Inspired by a whimsical fervor for color and shape, the three-floor renovated warehouse with rooftop extension and ground-level commercial space fuses the contemporary addition of a triple-height light well housing a glass and steel cable staircase with the exposed brick walls and ceiling joists of the original structure.
The focal point of the home is the glass and wood staircase with three-stories of stainless steel cables running through the heart of the residence. Look up to fully appreciate the merging of reclaimed wood and industrial metal that encapsulates the revival of Red Hook happening outside. Natural light streams inside from the expansive skylight, itself highlighted with concealed LED light cove. The stairs lead to the beacon of light itself – a dramatic glass bulkhead opening onto a rooftop deck and garden extension. The roof features custom-built cedar seating, steel cable railing and stunning views of the Statue of Liberty and East River.
Incorporating Flavor Paper wallpaper and Heath artisan tile, the home captures the unique and eclectic taste of the family; from the gold pony skin wallpaper in the master bedroom to a multicolored geometric wallpaper design in the son’s room to the teal, oval three-dimensional tiles of the master bathroom. This playfulness extends to the second floor where the owner’s love for cobalt blue and orange creates the color scheme.
