Rosewood Phuket project is a high-end resort opened on November 2017 situated in Phuket Island. The tourism development has been scattering around natural islands of southern Thailand through the past decade which create with a consequent result of destruction of the nature. Unlike typical resort development, which is aggressive method and installation, Rosewood Phuket has taken its mild and gentle approach in many resilient methods since the very beginning.
“Bring back the charm of Phuket” is the main aspiration from the landscape architect in the aspect of not only aesthetic but also environment, culture and nature. The charm of Phuket is the green forest and blue sea, and its local vitality of all creatures. The vitality is supported by a healthy and self-purified land. As such, revitalizing the native greenery, water treatment throughout the project site and a discreetly approach of physical design are three main aspects of how the sustainable landscape built in Rosewood Phuket. With nearly 7 years nonstop efforts for landscape design to completion, Rosewood Phuket is now turning into a habitant destination not only for human being but also native fauna and flora.
The objective of the landscape design is to look beautiful while using minimal water, require minimal input, and help to provide energy saving for the site. In order to achieve this, several methods are taken into main concern in early design stage and have been successfully implemented on site. At first, an in-depth site observation and research for native plants had been conducted to record the exact species which aim to be utilized widely on the site. This strategy also provides warm welcome to new local inhabitants, such as birds, animals and insects. In term of water management, the landscape will be used to collect and filter this water for use in irrigation and grey water use in the Resort. In addition to this green and gravel roofs will be used to help provide energy savings in the buildings. To keep the surrounding microclimate cool and prevent water evaporation, the materials used for the resort hardscapes are to be either light in color, porous, or shaded by trees to reduce the heat island effect & prevent heat build-up. As a comprehensive result, these are to achieve a sustainable landscape in Rosewood Phuket hotel.
