Replacing two aging Santa Monica motels, both within walking distance of the beach and Third Street Promenade, the Shore Hotel completes the profile of the city’s scenic oceanfront street with a contemporary design that adds moderately priced rooms to the market.
The project comprises 164 guest rooms in two buildings connected by a bridge. The vision was to use the natural landscape and vibrant urban life to blend the two while taking in the beauty of the sea and embracing the pedestrian activities of the area. The building closer to the beach is U-shaped with a large, elevated public courtyard with pool deck and gardens. This central courtyard provides beach views, improves the pedestrian experience with street retail aside. It relates to the park across the street. A metal-clad trellis over the street-side of the courtyard unifies the two wings of the main building and creates a sense of urban place, an outdoor "living room." The hotel embraces a continuous flow environment from the ocean to the hotel, with the urban living room looking out into the Pacific. Facing the ocean, the hotel lobby walls are sandstone, a clean wavy grey color that looks like sand to respect the beach environment. Above, floor-to-ceiling glass sliders and glass balcony railings add to maximizing transparency. Wooden panels accent the streamlined design and bring warmth to the exterior, arranged as partitions for privacy between room balconies. Room layouts are oriented to face the ocean views throughout.
To promote a minimal impact on the environment by the building and those who occupy it, the Shore Hotel carefully incorporates sustainable design strategies. With moderately priced rooms, the project offers sustainable and affordable luxury to the community and the city of Santa Monica. The hotel achieved LEED Gold certification and is ideal for environmentally-conscious hotel goers who don't want to sacrifice a luxurious experience.
