Fire and Ice: A Mountain Retreat
Nestled into the mountainside amidst Aspen and native trees, Snowmass Retreat is a new retreat home for generations of family to gather and enjoy the beautiful natural environment and outdoor recreation year-round. Drawing Inspiration from fire and ice, the design seamlessly integrates warm and cool elements to create a welcoming refuge.
A low and modest scale single-story structure quietly engages with the site, built into the hillside with a lower level for convenient ski-in, ski-out access. Prioritizing natural light, scenic views, and privacy, the home adopts an "L" shape design. A thin, linear stacked quartzite stone envelops the exterior, partially enclosing a courtyard. Punched window openings in the stone shell strategically frame views, while floor-to-ceiling glass walls and doors invite sunlight and fresh air throughout the seasons.
The program divides into four zones around a courtyard carved into the sloping mountainous site, offering a protected environment for shared family activities. The west quadrant accommodates entry functions on the uphill approach side. The North wing features a glass-enclosed double-height living space opening to a terrace with an exterior fire feature facing an infinity-edge reflecting pool. Here, the roof slopes upward to highlight the expansive view of the valley with clerestory windows that capture daylight from all directions. The South wing, with a private entrance, houses shared spaces around a fireplace, media room, terrace, hot tub, and swimming pool oriented to the sun. The east quadrant is open air, eroded, and given over to the landscape with a fire pit and long views down the valley. A partial lower level accommodates guest rooms, a ski room, and direct ski-in and ski-out access to trails and lifts. The garage acts as a buffer between private and entertaining spaces.
The exterior is clad in a mountain quartzite stone cut with long random lengths and alternating heights. At key locations, the stone extends inside, blurring the distinctions between the interior and exterior. The stone wall cladding and horizontal floor paving is coursed, cut, and stacked in the same orientation as extracted from the earth. Stone steps echo the walls and floors, visually blending together. The massing is kept low as if carved out of the rocky mountain terrain.
Almost every space offers mountain views, with a glass-lined courtyard blurring the boundary between indoors and outdoors. Natural tones and finishes dominate the interior—including exposed quartzite stone walls, stained oak millwork, dark oxidized bronze hardware, burnished plaster walls, and walnut shelving. White acoustical fabric ceilings provide a light, reflective surface, and acoustically comfortable space. Custom cast glass light fixtures evoke ice and crystal, accompanied by a strategic lighting approach that eliminates glass reflections and enables views of the landscape and the Aspen trees within the center courtyard, even at night.
More than a place of respite, Snowmass Retreat establishes a profound connection between earth, air, and the generations of family that will find joy within its walls—a place where "fire and ice" unite to create a lasting legacy.
