Where?
The loft is a part of the former school building built at the end of nineteenth century. The house is located in small south-Moravian city named Mikulov well known because of its unique landscape and wine.
What?
The space of former lecture hall was devalued by new concrete ceiling during the communist time. Above the hall was created hardly usable attic space. Beautifully carved roof frame was hidden and waited for revelation. In meantime the space of former lecture hall was changed into flats. It will never be again one continuous space.
Why?
When we have discovered this unique space we looked for a way how to keep the static logic, how to keep the atmosphere, how to comply with heritage protection laws and the most important, how to create comfortable space for living.
How?
The most important decision was to keep everything in original condition. One of our rules is that sometimes the most important part of the design is not to design. The attic was segmented by steel rods in a steady rhythm and there was a need to connect space and find the way how to go across the rods. We have enlarged the rectification nooses and created frames in the size of human body. The rods divide the space into individual "rooms". The walls are imaginary as same as in the Kim Ki-duk's movie.
Whom?
The project was done. But the most complicated part was to find someone who fit in this space. It is widely the biggest studio apartment. We made also family version but it was too complicated. At the end we found ideal residents, a couple. They use it as a summer place during the time spent in Czech Republic.
The budget was pressing us for some compromising solutions and some rough details which are going with the concept. We hope that the old spirit was preserved.
