At Square’s Headquarters, two staircases were conceived together as a central part of the design scheme’s primary organizational strategy. Each functions as a distinctive landmark bookending the project’s central Boulevard, a circulation spine that slices through the heart of the workplace. While the staircases are of vastly different scales, they are unified by their common formal sensibility. Together, these staircases serve both to physically connect the four floors, and to foster a sense of community among the 1,100 employees who work there. By connecting all four floors along the central boulevard, the staircases encourage chance encounters and generate vitality comparable to the urban marketplace the company serves.
Anchoring the boulevard at one end, a monumental Amphitheater Stair unifies the office floors and provides a flexible venue for a host of activities, from individual focus to large presentations. Clad in locally-sourced whitewashed eucalyptus, the stair’s cascading ribbon of wood descends though a series of double-height carved floor openings. Custom white square tables provide a delicate sculptural counterpoint to the grand gesture of the stair.
At the opposite end of the boulevard, a more intimately scaled ‘Square Stair’ connects the uppermost office floor to the main dining level. This stair was conceived in plan as a perfect square set below a glass skylight. The detailing of each landing and tread was carefully considered, so as not to break the square geometry. In contrast to the monumentality of the amphitheater, the Square Stair’s delicate detailing offers a more intimate expression, using the same materials and formal relationships as its counterpart. Set against the backdrop of a filigree eucalyptus scrim, the stair rises to the light-filled dining floor. Employees are rewarded for their journey to the top, where they may enjoy their lunch at an integrated walnut counter perched on the stair’s overlook.
