Staples upside-down on 5th Avenue, NYC? Not so easy.
When Staples came to Bergmeyer with a flagship site on 5th Avenue in New York City, the design team knew the space would be a challenge. With most of the floor area and all of the sales floor for office supplies on the second level, the store would have to be “upside down”.
The design team created a dramatic gravity-defying monumental stair to visually connect the floors and get customers upstairs. Putting the stair in the most prominent corner space also gave pedestrians on 5th Avenue enticingly framed views into the first floor sales area and Staples’ large selection of high end electronics. Within the stairs’ two-story volume, spherical white glass pendants and a burst of Staples’ iconic red color reinforce the brand, making for a distinctly upscale shopping environment.
