Steelhouse Omaha, the latest addition to Omaha Performing Arts performance venues, is a state-of-the-art contemporary concert hall with capacity of 3,000 patrons that fills a niche for mid-size events in Omaha’s Entertainment District. When conceptualizing Steelhouse Omaha, the owner and design architect wanted to incorporate Omaha’s industrial history into the structure both inside and out.
The façade of the building features an eye-catching lightweight aluminum panel façade with a black galvanized finish. The multi-faceted and canted exterior design pays tribute to Omaha’s industrial history and exude the rebellious, edgy spirit of the music that entertains patrons within its walls.
Serving as both the structural and enclosure engineer, the entrant worked closely with the architects, contractor, and fabricator to create the iconic venue. The internal coordination of the entrant’s dual services seamlessly realized the architectural brilliance of the gravity-defying 65-degree canted walls to create a landmark structure that captures the imagination of the public.
The design of the canted north and south exterior walls make a visually striking impression on patrons as they approach the venue. To achieve this design, the structural engineer faced several challenges, including stability during construction, detailing of rotated floor beams and canted columns, and transferring the canted column conditions above the VIP terrace. Additionally, the canted aluminum façade was engineered to protect the structure from the elements by ensuring that condensation and air leakage were minimized.
The performance hall is surrounded by a solid-grouted 10-inch-thick concrete masonry wall that serves the function of soundproofing the venue to preserve the tranquility of the adjacent residential district.
Inside the building, a monumental staircase exemplifies a clean and industrial look, due to the strategically hidden bolted connections of double plates and careful sequencing during construction to allow for erection tolerances and hidden bolted connections.
Steelhouse Omaha exceeded the client and owners’ goals of building a mid-sized venue capable of hosting a wide range of performers who were not previously visitors to the Omaha music scene while also honoring the steel roots of the city’s industrial district. With an estimated annual financial impact of $13 million, the venue’s significance extends beyond the music by contributing to the economic and cultural vibrancy of the city of Omaha.
Completed on time and according to budget, Steelhouse Omaha has welcomed the community with a packed event schedule that has featured a myriad of sold-out performances including the inaugural show, a concert by The Killers on May 12, 2023.
