The Sunset Breezehouse is a shining example of modern green prefab homebuilder Blu Homes’ state-of-the-art fabrication science, spanning 3-D modeling, manufacturing and novel “folding” technology.Fabrication of the Sunset Breezehouse began as a 3-D model created using proprietary Blu|3-D technology. Blu|3-D provides engineering information not often considered in architectural software—such as demands on the structures from wind, snow and seismic activity—enabling Blu to achieve site-specific engineering, which is then automatically detailed in the building plans used in construction. Each home is then built with remarkable precision with much lower variance allowances compared to average stick-built homes. (In keeping with its commitment to simplify customers’ homebuilding experience, Blu also created a free, consumer-facing tool based on Blu|3-D, called the Blu | 3-D Configurator™.)Each Blu home is built using precision tooling and trained craftsman in the company’s 250,000-square-foot climate-controlled factory in Vallejo, CA. Beginning with recycled structural steel frames, the Sunset Breezehouse was constructed completely in the factory in approximately eight weeks. Once complete, the four modules of the home, which included two bedrooms, four bathrooms, separate den and office, a separate guesthouse and all appliances, were folded down so that each module could fit on the back of a standard flatbed truck for delivery to Healdsburg, CA. Thanks to its folding technology, Blu Homes is the only prefab builder able to deliver its homes at a reasonable cost anywhere in the U.S. On site, unfolding reveals spaces that are larger and more luxurious than other prefab builders—who must contend with the challenges and costs of shipping oversized loads—including higher ceilings, wider floor plans and abundant windows. This type of fabrication offers the design benefits of an architect-designed custom home with the efficiency of prefab construction.
