OTG and ICRAVE’s award-winning transformation of Toronto Pearson International Airport’s (YYZ) Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 challenged the often stale and stressful experience of waiting for a flight by removing typical row seating and activating it with innovative food and beverage spaces, equipped with fully integrated technology solutions. Together, the team sought to analyze underutilized space by redistributing it in a way that simultaneously raises non-aeronautical revenue streams and engages passengers directly at, and on their path to, the gate.
The project consists of 13 hybrid restaurant, bar and market concepts with unique sculptural identities, located directly in the gate holds and terminal walkways. Complete with iPads at every seat, the concessions establish a sense of place and maintain openness for anxious travelers to watch over their departure gates. The program brings the distinct cultural tastes of Toronto to the traveling public with chef driven restaurants and striking design.
The concessions invite travellers on a colorful journey. Flanking the concourse as a vibrant terminal gateway, Apropros, a pair of cocktail bars, feature wavy, fin-like structures that are rotationally symmetrical with a vivid color gradient. Fetta Panini Bar boasts an impressive canopy, draped in a pixelated green graphic that slides onto the floor like snow melting off the hills, evoking a refreshing sense of spring. Neighboring Heirloom draws inspiration from the natural Ontario landscape with cozy elements including a pitched roof and glowing wood trees spaced around the seating area, encasing guests in the warmth of the space. Similar in structure, Marathi stands out with its striking arched trellis, illuminated with jewel-toned pendant lighting indicative of summer flowers found in a street bazaar.
With an increase in average dollars spent per enplanement, the reimagined terminals create a memorable passenger experience while balancing the technical requirements of design.
