The Pines is an impressive period property, built in the 1900s in a green suburb of Cobham, that has undergone a remarkable transformation.
After careful exploration of the house’s history, and listening to the brief, a large contemporary single storey extension was proposed to unify the length of the site by connecting the interior of the house to the garden. Previous incongruous additions were stripped out and the floor was excavated, and a new structure was inserted to achieve a dramatic open plan kitchen dining space. In addition, a replacement garage is provided to the front of the property without dominating the front facade.
To the rear an intimate courtyard and outdoor dining area connects the new home office, gym, and spa and complements the existing swimming pool, which itself is framed by a generous terrace and soft landscaping.
The design seeks a harmonious relationship to the original by referencing the white, rough cast render walls and black painted timber framing with the lime-washed white brick and the black cladding to the extension.
Our clients, both Swedish, shared our ethos for quiet understated design and together with the use of high-quality natural materials and by flooding the interior with natural light, have created a home of peaceful tranquility.
