The Vogelstrand House was designed for a site on the Skeleton Coast, Namibia, West Africa. The virgin site dramatically overlooks the Atlantic Ocean just north of the town of Swakopmund. The design takes advantage of the sloping topography, creating a series of terraces which negotiate the site and define the house and garden. Definition of the form and layout is reinforced through the use of thatched roofs which unite the building forms and mimic the topography of the site. The project integrates local materials and modern technology with traditional vernacular construction techniques such as veldt grass thatchand eucalyptus timber pole framing.
