Underscoring the creativity of the legal mind at work
Toronto-based Torys LLP, founded in 1941, is a top-tier North American practice representing prestigious companies in Canada and internationally. After completing the renovation of Torys’ Toronto offices, KPMB was invited to design their office in Calgary.
Consistent with the Toronto offices, the plan order uses the same guiding principles: the ends of corridors are kept open, offices have glass offices fronts, and the circulation corridors are generously proportioned to act as gallery space to showcase their Canadian art collection.
Like Toronto, Calgary also conducted a design competition for an integrated art work. The selected artist, Graham Gillmore, created two walls in the reception area with two full-height panelized paintings. A sculptural Caucus room located directly opposite the Gillmore installations is clad in vertical walnut veneered fins. The effect creates an abstraction of the topography of Alberta’s rolling prairie landscapes.
The design underscores the creativity of critical thinking that is at the essence of the practice of law and to reinforce Torys commitment to quality, excellence and Canadian culture. The project has served to firmly establish Torys’ presence in the Calgary market.
