The new central lobby brings several existing hospital buildings into one entry. The Critical Care Building, the Gill Heart Building, the existing Chandler Hospital, and the Children’s Hospital will now enter the same Lobby as the Patient Care Facility. The entry plaza on the exterior greets patients and visitors for easy access to the lobby, with a new parking structure nearby. The lobby is connected with an enclosed pedestrian bridge, wide enough for large volumes of pedestrians. The garage elevators and entry sequence is visible to the new Lobby for improved way finding.
The new Inpatient Nursing Care design has decentralized nursing, whereupon, nurses are closer to their patients and their supporting supply rooms have been distributed throughout the unit to lessen walking and time away from the patient. The patient room design allows for easy patient access to the room and to the patient toilet, utilizing wide entry doors and provides overnight accommodations for patient family members. Each room will have computer access to allow for up to date information access.
The University of Kentucky has been accepted as a Pebble Project participant to study the efficiencies of this design and measuring the cost savings.
