USP Library Competition
This competition proposal appears out of a reflection on identity: what is the role of a library in the contemporary hyper-context of information? What is the function of a traditional library at the city center, with its impressive cityscape?
The identity of the new Law School Library in Sao Paulo emerges through the definition of a ew model of (mis)use of its spaces: instead of a hermetic repository, the library must invite its users to discussion and debate - and architecture, through dealing with form, should feed this debates of possibilities. In articulating the program in a way to establish new connections between spaces, new ways to understand the use of the space are created, with new modes of occupancy and, as a principle, being a support for events and activities.
The library becomes a contemporary discussion hall, where the lightness of the ground floor folds in connecting planes, from the public streets cape to the auditorium halls, the café and the shop, arranging the flows in a way that the users are invited to the construction of the events. We call this element a plan of structuring among architecture, landscape and community. The internal spaces value thinking and discussing. The materiality and articulation of its spaces create visual connections in the vertical axis, and through the differentiation of the reading spaces, that go from isolated rooms to big shared tables, to the informality of the stairs - an almost literal representation of the urban spaces of encounter. This restructuring follows the logic of the city as a meeting point, and informs different conditions to different, unpredictable uses.
