The Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse is a luxurious oasis of serenity designed just for Boston.
Virgin Atlantic Airways was an ideal client for Bergmeyer. Extremely design-oriented, VAA expects every branded environment to strengthen the customer’s impression of their distinct international brand. Transforming a nondescript interior space in Logan Airport’s Terminal E into a sleek and stylish lounge that reinforced Virgin Atlantic’s focus and sophistication while also saying something about Boston was a tall order.
Bergmeyer’s design research began by creating image boards that captured quintessential Bostonian elements. Patterns and materials were then distilled and abstracted so that references to both the historical and modern aspects of the city could emerge. Wood, stone, and stainless steel are arranged in grids, planks, and running bonds that evoke Boston’s trademark brickwork, wrought iron, clapboard, and shingles. Despite the lack of windows, lightness permeates the space from concealed LED sources highlighting the clean, warm finishes.
A jumble of existing pipes and columns created opportunities to define distinct zones of activity: a library and business center with plush seating and floor lamps, a brasserie/deli with a long communal table and pendants, and a more casual lounge with banquettes and oversized swivel chairs. The result is a luxury hospitality experience that assiduously reflects VAA’s brand and subtly celebrates the city’s unique character.
