The welcome center addresses the needs of community and civic place-making within the context of a new regional residential community.
Anchoring one of the first post-recession single family residential communities, the amenity center reflects a renewed focus on authenticity, value, transparency, and quality of life. A place for residents and prospective residents to interact, the community center creates an inviting space for both gathering as well as quiet retreat. The contemporary design features an open, light-filled floor plan that allows views of the surrounding community to engage the interior. The dominant use of glazing in the design generates almost panoramic views of the community, reiterating the idea of transparency and honesty. Drawing on vernacular styles, the exposed steel roof structure recalls regional working agricultural forms to craft an architecture that is both timeless and contemporary.
A central axis regulates the site design. Marked by a series of breezeways, paths, and piers, this axis cuts through the amenity center and allows uninterrupted views across the site as one approaches the facility. A system of bike and pedestrian paths link the numerous ponds and lawns on the site to the community center and the surrounding residences. These paths combine with the central axis of breezeways and piers to create an architectural promenade that is activated by movement. As one strolls through the site, views are framed to stimulate a picturesque experience. Outdoor spaces range in scale from intimate garden retreats to public event and civic lawns. This variety echoes that of the interior to create spaces that are activated by use, interest, and time of day.
