Willow Academy is a new JK to grade 6 private school in downtown Toronto and their instant success required a move to larger premises in the summer of 2006. The new 7500 sq. foot school is located on the second floor of a office building at Mt. Pleasant and Davisville. There are five classrooms, a library, a gym an a multi-purpose/lunch room in addition to the usual support spaces such as the administration/ reception/ washrooms. The emphasis of the design was to provide a warm, welcome and durable physical environment that will allow Willow to continue growing. Part of this is accomplished by allowing for flexibility within the design. For instance the multi-purpose and library rooms are adjacent to each other and allow for expansion into one large room to accommodate the weekly all school meetings. In addition, the program was placed in such a manner that the school can expand over time and the placement of the classroom. Given the extremely limited budget, the principal elected to move much of the existing classroom furniture into the new space.
