Zoo Miami is home to hundreds of different animals from around the world—from jaguars, giraffes, and koalas to crocodiles, flamingoes, and meerkats and more. Looking to provide all these animals with the best possible care, the zoo needed a new, modern animal hospital. They engaged us to help.
We provided architectural, interior design, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing, and civil engineering services for this new animal hospital. This 21,000-square-foot (1,951-square metre) animal medical facility will replace the existing 5,600-square-foot (520-square-metre) hospital. The new space will feature radiology and CT scan rooms, treatment and surgery rooms, laboratory, pharmacy, and secure transportation docks.
Our team designed this new animal hospital with unique and strategically-placed animal care holding spaces to allow for healing and recovery in low-stress environments. These include an intensive care unit and various animal wards. The design also features specialized aquatic pools for crocodilians, as well as padded induction stalls and smooth wall pens for hoof stock animals. For an enriched guest experience, we designed wide hallways and large windows to allow viewing into the hospital’s treatment rooms.
The animal hospital will also offer specialized lab equipment, vast resources and workplaces, and year-round training and education programs for students, providing hands-on experience with various internship programs.
With Zoo Miami’s new animal hospital, health teams will be able to treat more than 2,500 animals representing close to 400 different species.
